The kitchen lies at the heart of the home and acts as a symbol of our consumption of goods, aesthetics and technologies. The AR December/January issue considers our associations with the space, from the revolutionary Frankfurt Kitchen to how cooking goes beyond domesticity in supporting collective resistance practices. In an ambivalent state between labour and leisure, the kitchen reflects our responsibilities, pleasures and fears and is constantly evolving from self-containment to alternative, shared models. The front cover, Kitchen #30 by artist Samuel R Richardson, poses how politics, gender relations and the seemingly unstoppable forces of capitalism condense on the cold, wipe-clean surfaces of the kitchen.
This issue also celebrates six exceptional houses from Spain, Sweden, Japan, Australia, Greece and Iceland, featured as finalists for AR House, highlighting the original ideas and intelligent structures that come together when architects design towards the existing landscape, from the street front, to the kitchen table.
