The garden beckons us in, delighting with petals and leaves everchanging with the seasons. Both a site of escape and a microcosm of the whole universe, its edges are rigidly drawn lines – the fence of an allotment, the circumference of the earth – but inside, it is a field rich with matter.

In this issue, we visit gardens in Mali, India, Palestine, Japan, South Africa and the UAE, looking to the processes by which they have been domesticated and designed, and consider the colonial legacies and geographies of exclusion that remain at the roots of gardening practices across the world. The gardener can allow shoots to creep and scatter, species mixing and entwining, or they can choose to uproot and throw over the garden wall; a fine line drawn between care and control.
