AR Reads: The Invisible Women – how female architects were erased from history

AR Reads is a podcast series by the AR in which pieces from the archive are lovingly selected and read out loud for you to enjoy

AR Reads is a podcast by The Architectural Review, bringing you a piece from our vast archive, read out loud for you to enjoy.

This episode features an essay called The Invisible Women: how female architects were erased from history by Eva Álvarez and Carlos Gómez, published in AR March 2017, which traces how architectural discourse and history has favoured the sole (male) starchitect, erasing collaborative realities and the work of women as it does so. For the past several years, the AR’s March issue has accompanied the W Awards, formerly known as Women in Architecture, including critical essays around themes of feminist practice, sex, masculinities and now care, as well as building studies, profiles and portfolios celebrating exceptional work by women in an effort to redress systemic imbalances in how authorship and value have been attributed in society.

This year, we will host a full week of digital events starting on Monday 8 March, including conversations between Kate Macintosh and Yasmeen Lari, and Lesley Lokko and Beatriz Colomina, as well as architects shortlisted for both the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture and the MJ Long Prize for Excellence in Practice.
