Ben Carré (1883-1978) began his career as a Parisian stage scenographer and became one of the first and most prolific of Hollywood’s art directors.
He is shown here in 1942, painting a backdrop in the MGM studio which could be lowered into the floor to facilitate his work. Due to the advent of CGI, illusionistic effects are more important than ever to the industry.
