The renovation of a nondescript villa has eliminated the ‘pretentious guise’ of the past
Lorenzo Guzzini transformed this abandoned 19th-century villa in Como in an attempt to architecturally elaborate and ‘freeze’ the owner’s memories of their home, Marche. Previously living among medieval villages built from brick, Guzzini sought to bring this solid, heavy and honest aesthetic into their new home. Dominated by pale exposed brickwork and dark wooden flooring, to Guzzini the materials themselves talk of collective historical memories that meet the owner’s personal memories in this interior. The upper level has been fitted with large skylights that bring diffuse light into the rooms, and several crystal bricks allow for glimpses of light through the solid walls.
