Shortlist revealed for the AR House awards 2022

The 15 shortlisted projects include houses from all over the world, from the UK, Ireland and Spain, to Mexico, Vietnam, New Zealand and The Bahamas.

The private house occupies a unique position in both the history of architecture and human imagination. Beyond its core function of shelter, it is an object of fantasy, a source of delight, a talisman and a testing ground. AR House recognises innovation and excellence in the design of dwellings. As the one commission that virtually all architects tackle at some stage in their careers, the house is still an important rite of passage for young designers. Offering the potential for genuine innovation, it remains critical to the ferment and crystallisation of new architectural ideas.

This year’s judging panel includes: Alice Casey, co-founder of Taka Architects, who were shortlisted in the AR House awards 2021 for Middleton Park Lodge, and educator; Martino Tattara, co-founder of Dogma and Associate Professor of Architectural Design at KU Leuven; and Momoyo Kaijima, co-founder of Atelier Bow-Wow and professor of ‘architectural behaviorology’ at ETH Zurich.

Entries were considered by the judges, who were looking for innovative yet well-developed houses that rethink the home, raising questions rather than providing ready-made solutions. All wished to see the repurposing of existing buildings, and projects that sit lightly in the landscape. As an international jury, they wanted to see houses that were rooted in culture and place.

The winner and commended projects will be announced online at the beginning of December and published in the December 2022/January 2023 issue of The Architectural Review.
