Stella Daouti joins this year’s jury for the AR House awards

Stella Daouti is a Greek architect and co-founder of Architecture Research Athens (AREA), together with Giorgos Mitroulias and Michaeljohn Raftopoulos.

AREA defines innovation as the critical interpretation of existing physical and cultural forms. ‘Our approach is heavily based upon openness and discourse, through which both clients and designers expand their perception of the project into unforeseen territories,’ Daouti said. ‘We ultimately believe that the best projects are themselves a form of research into new ideas and strategies that express clear intent.’

The practice has received numerous awards and distinctions for public and private projects in Greece and abroad. Among these, the Weekend House on Salamis Island was commended in the 2021 AR House awards, while in 2022 the team was shortlisted for the AR Emerging Awards. AREA has been twice nominated for the EU Mies Awards, in 2017 and 2022. Notable exhibitions include Made in Athens at the Greek Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale; 2015’s Adhocracy Athens at the Onassis Cultural Center, Athens; and Tomorrows at Le Lieu Unique in Nantes, France, in 2019

AR House

Launched in 2010, the AR House awards recognise originality and excellence in the design of dwellings. The house – a key rite of passage for architects – offers the potential for innovation and is critical to the ferment and crystallisation of new ideas. Looking for projects built in the last five years, the AR House awards recognises creativity and originality, and ideas that push the type forward whatever the scale and construction cost.
