As Maria Smith writes in the keynote for this issue, ‘play isn’t “just a game”’. Play is political, an attitude to pick up, put on and appropriate, with which to tackle the daily regime of work. In this issue, we explore play in many forms – from the suggestive or surreal spaces constructed in video games and theatre sets, to the real spaces for play in the city found in playgrounds, skate parks, schools, stadiums, theme parks and theatres – as well as all its attempts to explain, perform, or provide avenues for escape from everyday life.
The front cover of this issue features The Architectural Review board game, designed and illustrated by Mullet Man, with all the pieces you need to play available to cut out from the back cover. If you don’t want to cut up your copy of the AR, you can still download and print the board and all the pieces here
