In this issue, we feature the 18 rising star architects under the age of 45 recognised in this year’s AR Emerging Architecture Awards. Their projects represent an inspiring cross section of bright ideas, and range in scale from temporary pavilions to national museums.
The finalists, who hail from across the globe, from Mexico to Japan, are in good company. Now in their 18th year, past winners have included Sou Fujimoto, Bjarke Ingels, Thomas Heatherwick and Klein Dytham – all four are profiled in a special feature looking back at the early projects recognized by the prize that galvanised their future success.
Chosen by this year’s judges, Valerio Olgiati, Benedetta Tagliabue and Charles Holland, the £10,000 prize is awarded to the architect under the age of 45 who has created the most striking completed project.
This year’s winner is Frida Escobedo with La Tallera Siqueiros – the brave renovation of a Mexican murallist’s studio to create a gallery, library, artist studios and public spaces.
The Garden of Forking Paths by Beals Lyon was highly commended by the judges for its playful intervention in a park in Santiago, Chile. The practice’s first completed project, this walkway built out of recycled scaffolding planks reinterprets the labyrinth hedge maze at Versailles.
This edition is created using sheet-fed litho printing and vegetable-based inks and assembled by hand with tip-ins on FSC-certified paper and card, and includes two limited-edition postcards.
