With the six houses from the US, Australia, Mexico, Japan and Belgium featured as finalists for AR House in this issue, we celebrate the innovative ideas and intelligent structures that come together when architects are able to test their designs out on the ground.
We also take this issue to look to the homes and settlements that have been initiated, organised or constructed by those who dwell within them, for whom the formalising authority of the state has failed to provide. We question what role the architect plays when they seek to support or impose themselves on the self-built, and explore the effects – for good or ill – of the interventions they weave in the world.
