From traditional structures of support that must be rebuilt, to those who have had to build their own, we consider care in all its forms. We understand care as elastic: deconstructing outmoded customs that can no longer care for us. The hands that restrain and keep us down, can also be taught to hold and to lift us up. In this month’s issue we consider care in the city, the institution, in Ballroom, familial and non-familial structures and beyond. We look at those who have historically been denied care, and economic systems that would prefer we did not take care of things.
We also celebrate the W Awards, where we hope to redress historical imbalances in representation and recognise women’s global contribution to the profession. Featured in this issue is the Jane Drew Prize awarded to Kate Macintosh, the Ada Louise Huxtable Prize to Lesley Lokko, the Moira Gemmill Prize shortlist for architects under the age of 45, and the MJ Long Prize shortlist for UK-based architects working in practice. With profiles, portfolios and projects by practices in Spain, Uganda, Paraguay, and the United Kingdom, the W Awards are a celebration of outstanding work by women in architecture.
